One of Orange County's better-kept secrets, this casual taco stand has an atmosphere that's 100% hacienda and a menu featuring a flavorful array of spicy chicken, pork, beef, and veggie dishes. Carefully presented house specialties include a carnitas plate that comes with heaping servings of guacamole and Texas-style beans. Best of all, the restaurant's namesake makes several appearances, most notably on the potent margarita list.

LA HABRA. Ask a local where to find the best Mexican eats in town, and you'll likely hear this gem named at the top of the list. The restaurant's festive atmosphere is punctuated by stucco walls, earthy colors, and an awesome bricked-in patio. On weekends, the place springs to life with live mariachi music. Sample a pitcher of homemade margaritas, rumored to be La Habra's best. Then, go for Grandma Rosa's special green corn tamales with beans and rice, a Sonora-style enchilada with olives and fried egg, or the 50th anniversary burrito Dorado.

NEWPORT BEACH. Home to authentic Mexican cuisine, this exotic, romantic restaurant is a terrific place to wind down after a tough day at the office, at the theme park, or at the mall. Watch the sun set over the horizon while you sample the house's famous crab enchiladas, mole pablano, mole verde, and specialty margaritas. A cantina provides an alternate place to gather and to mingle, but Javier's is all about sociability in food and dining, so ready yourself for an eminently pleasant evening no matter which route you choose.
